The application period for the EIT-RM grants is finished.


The European Institute for Technology through its Raw Materials branch supports young scientists willing to participate at ICEEM09 by providing 10 PhD Students (or PhD graduates that have obtained their PhD in 2016) with refunds for travelling expenses (travel and accommodation).

Selection Process

Contributions will have to be developed considering the topics listed below (please note that this is a shortened list of themes of topics). Abstracts should consider the aims and scopes of EIT-RM and aspects like: entrepreneurship and innovation components, development of raw material into a major strength for Europe by boosting competitiveness and the attractiveness of the raw materials sector.

Selection criteria

Abstracts and the other documents (see below) will be reviewed by the International Scientific Committee together with EIM-RM representatives, considering the following selection criteria:

Criterion score
Strategic importance for the EIT RawMaterials
Considering entrepreneurship and innovation components, development of raw material into a major strength for Europe by boosting competitiveness and the attractiveness of the raw materials sector
Quality of the project definition
Considering the raw materials challenge addressed by the project and why the project will deliver robust solutions (background, current situation, issues & opportunities – specifically pertaining to EIT RawMaterials)
Candidate from Eastern and Southern Europe (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain)
In order to support European Regions with moderate/modest innovation performance, according with the Regional Innovation Scoreboard
Candidate participating in an EIT labelled PhD programme 1

Evaluation scale
: In relation to each of the criterion above, each project will be scored from 0 to 5 according to the following scale:

0 Non-existent: no relevant information provided in the application file or cannot be judged because out of range
1 Very poor: The criterion is addressed in a very incomplete and unsatisfactory manner
2 Poor: There are serious inherent weaknesses in relation to the criterion in question
3 Fair: While the proposal addresses the criterion, there are significant weaknesses that would need correction
4 Good: The proposal addresses the criterion well, although some improvements are possible
5 Excellent: The proposal successfully addresses all relevant aspects of the criterion in question. Any shortcomings are minor only.

Selected themes and topics

PhD Students have to prepare a 2 pages abstract (according to this template) in one of the topics supported by the EIT-RM:

I. Environmental biotechnology in the circular economy
– Biomineralization for remediation and valorisation
– Bioelectrochemical systems

III. Sustainable waste management and exploitation for chemicals, materials and energy recovery:
– Waste treatment and valorisation
– End-of-waste alternatives for new by-products and fuels (biowaste bio-refineries)

IV. Sustainability assessments and eco-innovation
– Life cycle assessments
– Eco-design, eco-innovation and eco-entrepreneurship

V. Novel materials for environmental and energy applications
-Materials, eco-processes and eco-products

Other important information

Candidates will have to prepare and upload in the form below the following documents:

  • Letter of Motivation (1 page),
  • Curriculum Vitae (2 pages),
  • List of Publications,
  • PhD Student Certificate / PhD Diploma

For ICEEM09 participation the selected PhD students / doctors will have to prepare the following materials:

  • Conventional 15 minutes presentation during the parallel sessions,
  • a poster of their work to be displayed in a special poster session supported by EIT-RM and,
  • a flash presentation (max 3 minutes) that will be presented on Saturday in a dedicated young specialists workshop.

The refund will be in the limit of 500 EUR to cover for accommodation and travel expenses and will be available for the selected PhD Students at ICEEM09 in Bologna.

Additionally, the EIT-RM together with the ICEEM organizers will award three prizes (500, 300 and 200 EUR) for the best PhD Students papers presented at ICEEM09.

Please note that candidates that apply for these EIT-RM grants are not eligible for the reduced PhD students fee application.
